Which? has named Aldi the cheapest supermarket in the UK for June 2026, with a basket of 95 items costing £163.34. This is £66.54 cheaper than the most expensive supermarket, Waitrose, which came in at £229.88.
Close Competition with Lidl
Lidl was the second cheapest, with a total of £164.92 for the same basket. However, when using the Lidl Plus rewards app, the total dropped to £164.79, narrowing the gap to just £1.45 more than Aldi.
The list of 95 items included a mix of own-brand and branded goods such as Birds Eye peas, Cathedral City cheddar, and Kellogg's corn flakes.
Loyalty Cards Make a Difference
Sainsbury's Nectar card deals helped it come in cheaper than Tesco in June. Sainsbury's had 27 loyalty discounts, bringing its total to £193.30, while Tesco's Clubcard pricing was £194.67. However, without a loyalty card, Sainsbury's became one of the most expensive at £203.83.
Asda held fourth place at £190.39, while Morrisons (£198.53) was cheaper than the standard non-loyalty prices of both Tesco (£200.63) and Sainsbury's.
Price Gap Widens
Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, said: "While inflation remains stable for now, many households will be worried about prices going up in the coming months. The discounters remain the cheapest supermarkets for everyday essentials, while at the larger supermarkets the massive gap between member and non-member prices shows that retailers are increasingly locking their best value away behind a digital wall."
She added: "When walking into one supermarket over another – or forgetting your loyalty card – can mean paying over 40 per cent more for basically the same everyday essentials, switching where you shop is still the fastest way to slash your weekly grocery bill."
