Tea and coffee drinkers often find their favourite mugs stained brown by tannins. While harmless, these marks can look unsightly, especially when guests are over. A simple cleaning hack using denture tablets promises to restore mugs to their former glory in just 10 minutes.
The tip was shared on the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook page after user Tia Macaulay asked for help removing stubborn stains from a Cath Kidston mug. She had tried soaking in hot water and washing-up liquid without success.
Group member Sonia Alden recommended denture tablets, stating: 'I use denture tablets and boiling water. Let it sit for a bit and then wash as normal. It is much safer than bleach and does the job perfectly.' She added that minty tablets help ensure no residue remains.
Harriet Young and Joanne Westwood also endorsed the method, noting it is cheap and effective for cleaning teaspoons too. To use, dissolve a denture tablet in hot water and soak the mug for around 10 minutes; repeat if necessary.
Denture tablets cost as little as 3p each and are widely available at supermarkets, Boots, Amazon, and discount stores. Alternative solutions include scrubbing with ordinary table salt or using specialist products like Astonish Clean and Revive or Elbow Grease.
