Eligible state pensioners can claim up to £14,970.10 in freebies and discounts from November, thanks to several Government schemes designed to ease the financial strain of winter. These include the Winter Fuel Payment, the Warm Home Discount Scheme, and Cold Weather Payments, all of which provide relief from high energy costs.
Low-income pensioners can also receive support through Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) benefits, including Attendance Allowance and Pension Credit. Pension Credit also opens the door to additional perks such as a Council Tax discount and a free TV licence for those over 75.
Pension Credit Take-Up Drive
According to the latest DWP statistics, the 2025 to 2026 financial year saw a 34% decrease in Pension Credit applications compared with the previous year, suggesting many pensioners are still missing out on support they are entitled to.
The DWP launched a new drive to boost Pension Credit take-up in October, sending letters to 660,000 households with a high proportion of low-income pensioners, advising them on how to apply.
Minister for Pensions Torsten Bell said: "Far too many pensioners are missing out on support they’re entitled to. Pension Credit is worth more than £4,500 a year on average and can make a real difference to people’s finances, while also opening the door to help with bills and other everyday costs."
He added: "If you think you might be eligible, it’s worth checking. We want to make sure pensioners get the support they’re entitled to and don’t miss out on money that could help them in retirement."
Key Benefits and Discounts
In the 2026 to 2027 tax year, Pension Credit can top up weekly income to £238 for single people or £363.25 for couples. Claimants must live in England, Scotland, or Wales and have reached State Pension age. The benefit is now worth an average of £4,500 per year.
Pension Credit also unlocks access to other support, including Housing Benefit (up to £1,000 per year), a free TV Licence (worth £180), and a Council Tax discount (up to £1,600).
Other benefits include free NHS prescriptions (worth £9.90), free eye care (up to £215), free NHS dental treatment (up to £1,000), and a Royal Mail redirection discount (saving £31).
Winter Payments and Attendance Allowance
The Winter Fuel Payment, worth between £100 and £300, is available to state pensioners born on or before June 27, 1960, living in England, Wales, or Northern Ireland. The Warm Home Discount provides a £150 discount on electricity bills for eligible low-income households, and Cold Weather Payments of £25 are triggered when temperatures drop to 0C or below for seven consecutive days.
Attendance Allowance, worth up to £5,959.20 per year, helps with extra costs for those with a disability severe enough to require assistance. The higher rate of £114.60 per week is available to those needing regular help day and night.
Eligible pensioners can apply for Pension Credit online via GOV.UK or by calling the Pension Credit claim line on 0800 99 1234.
