Wales players to earn £9,000 per game in Nations Championship after pay dispute resolution
Wales players to get £9,000 per Nations Championship game

Wales' players are set to receive around £9,000 per game in this summer's Nations Championship following the resolution of a pay dispute with Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) bosses. The agreement, reached late on Wednesday, brings the basic match fees for the tournament into line with those paid during the Six Nations.

Dispute disrupts Fiji preparations

Preparations for Saturday's match against Fiji were thrown into disarray on Wednesday after it emerged that players were locked in meetings with WRU officials over match fees. A scheduled press conference was cancelled as the playing group decided against media duties while talks continued over what the governing body termed 'employment terms'.

Disputes over match fees are not new for Welsh rugby, with the national team having come close to striking on previous occasions. While industrial action was not specifically threatened this time, sources indicated there were moments this week where the situation could have escalated.

Agreement details

WalesOnline understands that the basic match fees for this year's Nations Championship Tests against Fiji, Argentina, South Africa, Japan, New Zealand, and Australia have been brought into line with Six Nations pay. During the Six Nations, players in the matchday 23 receive around £9,000, with a £4,000 win bonus on top. Additional performance-based bonuses depend on Wales' final table position and potential Grand Slam victory. Image rights payments are minimal.

Initially, the WRU had offered around £6,000 per match for the Nations Championship, citing inability to match Six Nations terms. However, Wednesday's meetings raised the offer to £9,000, though without the same win bonuses as the Six Nations.

Bonus structure and context

If Wales win all seven matches in the tournament, each player would receive a £10,000 bonus in addition to basic fees. Players not in the matchday squad receive a daily allowance—around £300 per day in the Six Nations, slightly less for the Nations Championship.

For context, England's match fees were previously around £23,000 per game, but most top players now have enhanced 'Elite Player Squad' contracts, offering guaranteed annual salaries of around £160,000 instead of match fees.
