The Biggar branch of the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) is set to close on September 16, prompting local MSP Mairi McAllan to challenge the decision due to insufficient community consultation.
Closure Details and Mobile Banking Replacement
The branch on High Street will shut its doors permanently on September 16. RBS plans to introduce a weekly mobile bank stop in the town to ensure continued access to face-to-face banking and personal services. This mobile service will be part of the bank's 21 mobile van routes, which also include a recently added stop in Larkhall.
RBS announced the closure of the Biggar branch as one of six closures across Scotland this autumn, including another Lanarkshire branch in Motherwell. The bank described it as a "difficult decision" as it works towards a sustainable branch network, noting that 95% of customers now use digital banking. The weekly mobile service aims to retain in-person support, which the bank considers "an important part of how customers manage their finances."
MSP's Response and Campaign
Mairi McAllan, the Clydesdale MSP, has written to bank officials seeking an urgent meeting. She expressed frustration that RBS did not consult with the community or elected representatives before the announcement. She is campaigning for the retention of local banking services and is particularly concerned about the town centre cashpoint remaining operational.
McAllan stated: "Many in Biggar will recall that in 2018, a proactive and determined community campaign came together to successfully keep the branch open – therefore, it is frustrating that no engagement or consultation has taken place prior to this announcement." She added: "I am keen to explore a way forward which ensures a banking presence in Biggar, which meets the demands and needs of the town and wider afield. In particular, I regard it as essential that the ATM remains operational."
She acknowledged that while many people use digital banking, a number of businesses and older people rely on a physical branch. She noted the limitations of the proposed mobile branch and wants to discuss better solutions. McAllan pledged to update constituents after meeting with RBS and assured them she will fight hard for the continuation of banking services in Biggar.
Alternative Banking Options
Customers in Biggar will be directed to alternative facilities, including remaining RBS branches in Lanark and Hamilton, as well as South Lanarkshire banking hubs in Carluke and Cambuslang. RBS has committed to no further closures at its remaining 62 Scottish branches until at least 2029 and plans to invest £50 million in refurbishments in 2026-2027, including modernisation of the Hamilton and Lanark branches to improve customer experience.
Solange Chamberlain, retail banking chief executive at parent company NatWest Group, said: "We understand the impact these changes can have for our colleagues and customers, and we will engage personally with all those affected by this closure announcement."
