Nationwide Building Society has been crowned the best bank in the United Kingdom by Forbes, in a notable achievement that sees it outperform both traditional high-street rivals and innovative digital challengers. The annual global ranking, which evaluates 410 banking organisations worldwide, assesses institutions based on rigorous criteria including customer satisfaction, trustworthiness, digital service quality, financial advice, and overall recommendation rates.
Top Performers in the UK Banking Sector
In the UK edition of the Forbes list, twelve financial institutions secured places, with Nationwide emerging as the clear leader. It was followed closely by first direct, Monzo, Aldermore Group, Starling, and Revolut, highlighting a competitive landscape where digital neobanks are increasingly reshaping industry standards through their advanced service offerings.
What Sets Nationwide Apart
Forbes highlighted several distinguishing factors that contributed to Nationwide's top position. Unlike many competitors that are reducing physical presence, Nationwide has committed to keeping all its branches open until at least the start of 2030, a move that enhances accessibility for customers. Additionally, the building society has introduced innovative products such as the Helping Hand mortgage deal and expanded community services, reinforcing its customer-centric approach.
Dame Debbie Crosbie, Chief Executive of Nationwide, expressed pride in the recognition, stating, "We're incredibly proud Forbes has recognised Nationwide as the UK's top‑rated banking services provider, reflecting the strength of our mutual model." She further noted, "We have been number one for customer satisfaction for 14 consecutive years and led in current account switching last year, while returning a record £2.8 billion in value to our members."

In a separate development, Nationwide has expanded its community outreach by trialling an extension of dementia clinic access. This initiative, in partnership with Dementia UK, offers free appointments with Admiral Nurses at more Virgin Money branches in northern England and Scotland. Since its launch in 2024, over 5,700 appointments have been booked, with the service available to non-Nationwide or Virgin Money clients as well.
This dual focus on traditional banking strengths and innovative community support underscores Nationwide's unique position in the UK financial sector, balancing digital advancement with tangible, localised customer care.
