Monzo app crash leaves thousands locked out of accounts

Thousands of Monzo customers have been left unable to transfer cash or access their accounts after a major outage hit the digital bank on Wednesday afternoon. The popular banking app crashed suddenly, prompting frustrated account holders to flood social media with complaints.

Outage spike and customer reports

Independent outage tracking site Downdetector recorded a massive spike in user reports, logging over 3,100 complaints around 1.05pm. Normally, the status monitor sits at a baseline of zero. Panicked users quickly turned to X (formerly Twitter) to vent their annoyance and find out if others were suffering the same fate.

One worried customer posted: "Is the app down – trying to transfer money but it isn't leaving my account?" Another blasted the service for leaving them stuck mid-transaction, while others voiced fears over delayed payments, reports the Mirror.

Monzo acknowledges the issue

The online-only bank acknowledged the widespread glitch and issued a statement apologizing to impacted users. A spokesperson for Monzo said: "We're sorry for any trouble you're having making bank transfers or using the Monzo app. Our team is aware of the issue and working on a fix to get things running again ASAP. Thanks for bearing with us, we appreciate your patience."

The exact cause behind the technical meltdown has not yet been confirmed.
