Manchester United have definitively abandoned their pursuit of Atalanta midfielder Ederson, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. The Brazilian was initially set to become United's first summer signing after a £39 million deal was agreed, but the transfer collapsed following medical concerns.
Failed Medical and Collapsed Deal
Ederson completed initial medical tests before traveling to the World Cup with Brazil. However, after Brazil's surprise elimination by Norway, he underwent further medical checks that led United to pivot away from the deal. Romano reports that discussions have 'completely collapsed' and will not be revived before the end of the summer.
Atalanta Offer New Contract
Atalanta have since offered Ederson a new and improved contract, further reducing the likelihood of a move elsewhere. United have shifted focus to other midfield targets, including Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos.
Other Midfield Targets
United have also failed to land Mateus Fernandes, who joined Tottenham for £85 million. United offered a similar figure to West Ham but included bonuses rather than a fixed fee, leading Fernandes to choose Spurs. Meanwhile, Santos has signed a five-year contract until 2031, and Tielemans is expected to undergo a medical after United triggered his £35 million release clause at Aston Villa.
Midfield Rebuild Continues
United have been seeking to strengthen their midfield after Casemiro left upon contract expiry. Manuel Ugarte, initially listed for transfer, sustained a long-term knee injury preventing a summer sale. The club remains active in the market to address their midfield needs.
