Lloyds Bank will close 10 branches in November as part of its group-wide closure campaign. The banking group, which owns Halifax and Bank of Scotland, is reducing its presence on the high street as customers opt for online banking, with plans to close 240 locations across the entire business by 2027.
Northern and Midlands branches affected
Most of next month's Lloyds Bank closures are in the North of England, including a Liverpool branch closing on November 9, two sites in Yorkshire and one in Tyne and Wear. The remaining closures are in the Midlands, including two Leicestershire branches, one Derbyshire bank and a Nottinghamshire branch.
All closures will be completed by November 19, with Harrogate the final one to shut its doors.
Bank's response and customer support
Lloyds Banking Group said: "When making changes to our branch network, we always look to understand the impact on our customers – including how they continue to access banking services.
"Because of this, we may sometimes have a Community Banker visit the area after the branch closes. Or, as part of an independent review, a Banking Hub or Deposit Service may be set up in a nearby location. We follow Financial Conduct Authority guidance when announcing closures."
Customers can access in-person banking services at any of Lloyds' brands, including Halifax and Bank of Scotland. They will be able to deposit cash, make withdrawals and pay in cheques. Customers can also use banking hubs, which are shared spaces run by the Post Office, to deposit and withdraw cash, get face-to-face support and manage their accounts. As of February, there were more than 200 hubs up and running around the UK.
Impact on vulnerable customers and industry trends
Critics said that bank closures will impact the most vulnerable, who have no access to internet banking, or who may not be able to travel further afield to other bank locations.
The trend has been seen across many banking providers. Santander is also undergoing a major closure programme, similar to NatWest. All banks have cited online banking as the deciding factor.
However, some banks are bucking the trend and opening more branches. Barclays is extending its hours and opening three branches by the end of November, including in Poole, Bishop's Stortford and Beverley. Nationwide has also pledged to open more sites in areas that need more in-person banking services.
