DWP Universal Credit Update: July 2026 Deadline Nears for 2.3 Million Claimants
DWP Universal Credit Update: July 2026 Deadline Nears

The Department for Work and Pensions has issued a fresh update on the Universal Credit migration process as the July 2026 deadline approaches. More than 2.3 million people have received migration notices to switch from legacy benefits such as income support and housing benefit, but hundreds of thousands have yet to make the transition, risking a complete loss of financial support.

Migration Notices and Current Progress

Claimants receive a 'migration notice' with a specific deadline to claim Universal Credit or face losing their benefits. Official data shows that 1.99 million people have successfully made claims, leaving a significant number still at risk. Minister Stephen Timms stated in Parliament: "All customers have access to support throughout the process, including the Move to Universal Credit Helpline and independent Help to Claim support provided by Citizens Advice."

Exemptions and Enhanced Support

The DWP has announced exemptions for vulnerable groups, particularly Employment and Support Allowance customers who may need personal appointees. Enhanced support includes tailored contact and visiting officer assistance for those who haven't engaged with the process. Income-related ESA and certain Housing Benefit claims will end on June 30, though this deadline was extended in March.

Critical Deadline Ahead

Citizens Advice warns: "Most legacy benefits will stop in July 2026." Claimants are urged to act promptly to avoid disruption to their income. The DWP emphasizes that support is available through the helpline and Citizens Advice.
