A major UK cinema chain is closing one of its large sites in a Welsh city, and locals have expressed their disappointment over the news. Vue has confirmed that its Cardiff cinema, which features 13 screens, will shut permanently, marking the end of its presence in the Welsh capital.
End of an Era
The cinema at Stadium Plaza will close by the end of June, leaving locals 'gutted'. The British chain, which operates around 90 cinemas in the UK and Ireland alone, opened the Cardiff location in 2005 after taking over the former Ster Century cinema site. Until its final day of operations, which has not yet been announced, the cinema will continue to operate as normal.
Impact on Wales
After the closure, Wales will have only two Vue locations left: one in Merthyr Tydfil and another in Cwmbran. The chain stated it is consulting with staff members, who have expressed concerns about potential redundancies.
Vue Spokesperson Statement
A spokesperson for Vue said: 'We can confirm that our site at Stadium Plaza will be closing later this month. We are consulting with our Cardiff colleagues, who are our priority, and until this point, we will continue to provide cinemagoers in Cardiff the very best big screen experience.'
Local Reactions
Locals took to social media to share their disappointment. One person wrote on Facebook: 'Sad news. Always had the best prices.' Another said they were 'gutted' as it was a go-to cinema for many in the city.
High Street Concerns
Fears over the health of the high street have been growing, with major retail chains such as Poundland, New Look, and River Island closing numerous locations across the UK. Labour has previously faced accusations of 'killing' the high street through increased business rates. Retail experts warn that changes to business rates and mounting financial pressure could push more shops, pubs, and restaurants over the edge.
Reasons for Closure
Vue has not disclosed the reasons behind the decision to shut its Cardiff location. The Daily Express has contacted Vue for comment, but the chain has not confirmed whether the closure is due to high operational costs, strategic business decisions, or other factors.
