Tottenham Sell Luka Vuskovic to Brighton After Transfer Request Threat
Tottenham Sell Luka Vuskovic to Brighton for £50m

Tottenham Hotspur have completed the sale of highly-rated centre-back Luka Vuskovic to Brighton & Hove Albion in a deal worth up to £50 million. The transfer follows the 20-year-old's threat to submit a formal transfer request to force an exit from north London.

Why Vuskovic Wanted Out

Vuskovic, considered one of Europe's most promising young defenders, was eager to secure regular first-team football at Tottenham next season. However, manager Roberto De Zerbi could not guarantee him a starting role. This prompted the Croatian international to seek a move away, with Brighton emerging as the primary suitor.

Brighton had at least two bids rejected before agreeing a fee with Tottenham. The deal is structured with an initial £46 million, with the remaining £4 million in potential add-ons. Standard Sport understands that Tottenham retained a 20 per cent sell-on clause and matching rights for any future sale, allowing the defender to potentially return to north London.

Brighton's Perspective

Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler welcomed Vuskovic to the club, stating: “Luka has enjoyed a fantastic start to his career - it’s one we’ve followed closely. Last season he demonstrated he can play at a very high level and we want to help him build on that within our environment. There’s been a lot of external noise about Luka joining us, but he is still a young guy who will need time to adjust to the demands of playing for Brighton and the Premier League. We are confident that he will take this in his stride though.”

Record Sale for Tottenham

The deal marks the largest transfer fee Tottenham have ever received for a player who never made a competitive first-team appearance for the club. It also ranks as the third-biggest sale Tottenham have made in the past decade. Spurs had initially hoped to keep Vuskovic this summer or send him on another loan following a successful spell at Hamburg, but the player and his representatives made clear their desire for a permanent exit if regular minutes were not forthcoming.

Vuskovic's International Experience

Vuskovic started Croatia's World Cup opener against England but did not play a further minute in his nation's next four games before elimination. Despite limited playing time on the international stage, his potential remains highly regarded, and Brighton will look to develop him further in the Premier League.
