Swansea City are 'seriously considering' appointing former striker Michu as their new sporting director, according to reports in Italy. The 40-year-old Spaniard, who helped fire the club into Europe over a decade ago, could fill the void left by the departure of Richard Montague last September and Adam Worth, who was head of recruitment, earlier this year.
Sky Sports journalist Gianluca Di Marzio reports that the Swans are weighing up a move for Michu. However, sources have played down the links to WalesOnline.
Michu is currently working as sporting director at Burgos CF, a second-tier Spanish club that narrowly missed out on the promotion play-offs in Segunda Division on goal difference, with Castellón sneaking in ahead of them.
Michu's Swansea Legacy
The Spaniard is revered by fans in SA1 following his spell with the club during their Premier League days. Having signed from Rayo Vallecano for £2 million in the summer of 2012, he scored 22 goals in his first season at the club. His memorable strikes included two against Arsenal at the Emirates, another against eventual Premier League champions Manchester United, and a goal in the semi-final of the League Cup against reigning European champions Chelsea.
He also scored in the League Cup final against Bradford at Wembley, helping the Swans to the first piece of major silverware in their history. After guiding the club into Europe, he was on the scoresheet during their famous 3-0 win over Valencia at the Mestalla. A Spain call-up followed, but injuries ultimately took their toll on his career. Nonetheless, those initial two seasons endeared him to Swansea fans forever.
Search for a New Sporting Director
The club have been searching for a new sporting director since Montague left in September. Steve Brown, the former director of scouting at Manchester United, had previously been in the running for the job, but the club are believed to have moved away from him as a target. Former Rosenborg chief Mikael Dorsin was another name linked previously.
Michu had been due to return to the Swansea.com Stadium for a charity match last month but had to pull out of managing a European XI in aid of Joseph’s Smile due to a clash with an important fixture in Burgos' promotion push.
