Dozens of single people are gathering for low-stakes alternatives to first dates through pub crawls, fiestas, and quiz nights organized by Friend of a Friend. The concept was created by friends Alba Padilla, 28, and Ginheva Konte, 27, who grew tired of traditional dating and apps.
From Boredom to Community
Alba told the ECHO: 'I had this idea of starting a project in town to bring people together. Basically, we're both single and tired of dating apps so this was a way of meeting people organically. We didn't feel comfortable with speed dating - we just wanted normal events where everyone was single.'
The pair launched an Instagram account to promote Friend of a Friend, with the name paying homage to the traditional idea of meeting someone special through a mutual friend. Alba said: 'Back in the day, that's how our parents and grandparents met new people.'
First Event Success
The debut event was a quiz night on July 31, 2025, at Dicey Reilley's in Wolstenholme Square. Despite jumping head first into the unknown, the atmosphere and community that gathered made the event feel like a walk in the park for the organizers.
Alba added: 'We really didn't know what to expect but everyone was so lovely. We felt really comfortable and the end of the night was amazing because people wanted to continue socialising over drinks. We ended up in Red Lion with everyone so it was really nice.'
Variety of Events
Friend of a Friend organizes a wide range of events designed to make guests feel comfortable, welcomed, and entertained. Past events include the creative 'Write Your Type' workshop, pub crawls in partnership with Liverpool Pub Crawl (their largest turnout with 56 attendees), and 'Date My Friend,' where friends pitch their best mates to potential matches.
Upcoming Fiesta
An upcoming event is a collaboration with Castro's sandwich bar, hosting a 'Fiesta for Singles' on June 14. Guests are encouraged to brush up on Spanish pickup lines for a day of games, food, and drinks.
Diverse Attendance
Alba said: 'The people are very mixed and diverse from every culture from mid-20s to early 40s. We tried to make it a smaller age range at the beginning but everyone wanted to come along.'
The events are primarily straight, but a special LGBT+ event was held, which organizers hope to repeat.
Slow Burn Approach
Alba emphasized that the goal is building a community, not speed dating. 'It's a very slow burn. People come here because they know us after a few visits and they build bonds with people they've already met. That's when they can decide if they like someone and want to go on a date.'
'The thing people say all the time is they feel comfortable. That's what we always wanted. Women feel comfortable, it's a safe space and thankfully we've never had a single problem with anyone. Everyone is always nice and respectful and just has really great time getting to know each other.'
The only requirement for attending is being single or in an ethically non-monogamous relationship. Everyone is welcome to meet new people and see what relationships blossom.
