Ross Wilson touts Newcastle 'project' amid Bruno Guimaraes concerns
Ross Wilson: Newcastle 'project' key amid Bruno concerns

Newcastle United sporting director Ross Wilson has highlighted the club's 'project' as a key factor in signing Ajax teenager Sean Steur, even as star midfielder Bruno Guimaraes reportedly harbours concerns about the team's trajectory.

Steur signing hailed as proof of progress

The Magpies completed the signing of 18-year-old midfielder Sean Steur from Ajax for a fee worth up to £23 million. In announcing the deal, Wilson emphasised that the move reflects the appeal of Newcastle's long-term vision. 'It’s testament to the project we’re working on here that players like Sean are so keen to join,' Wilson said. He added that the club acted swiftly to secure Steur, who was also attracting interest from across Europe.

Contrast with Guimaraes' doubts

Wilson's optimism contrasts with reports that Bruno Guimaraes is concerned about Newcastle's direction. According to sources close to the player, Guimaraes is unsettled after the club finished 12th in the Premier League last season and failed to build on their 2025 Carabao Cup triumph. Additionally, key players Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon were sold to Tottenham and Barcelona respectively. Guimaraes was expected to be the cornerstone of Newcastle's new policy, but his future is now uncertain amid interest from Arsenal.

Shift to young talent

Wilson's strategy has pivoted towards signing promising young players from outside the Premier League. This summer, Newcastle has also brought in 20-year-old goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen and 20-year-old winger Bazoumana Toure, and is progressing on a deal for 20-year-old Swiss World Cup star Johan Manzambi. Wilson believes this approach avoids inflated fees and relies on Eddie Howe's coaching to develop players into top-tier talent, similar to the development of Tino Livramento, Lewis Hall, and Anthony Gordon.

Wilson acknowledged the policy since December last year, saying he will 'live or die' by it. Toure himself praised Wilson's vision in his welcome interview. However, retaining Guimaraes remains crucial for fan support. Wilson's next challenge is to convince the Brazilian to buy into the Newcastle project.
