Rangers have held initial talks with Serie A side Bologna as they intensify their pursuit of Scotland international Lewis Ferguson, with reports in Italy valuing the midfielder at £17.2 million. The potential deal would shatter the Scottish transfer record, according to Corriere di Bologna, which claims Rangers manager Derek McInnes is eager to pull off a "major transfer coup" by reuniting with his former Aberdeen protégé.
Exploratory discussions underway
The Rangers Review has revealed that exploratory discussions have begun between the clubs regarding the financial framework required to secure Ferguson's signature. Bologna, who have also been linked with Rangers midfielder Nico Raskin, have received interest from across Europe for the 25-year-old. However, McInnes appears determined to bring Ferguson back to Ibrox and place him at the heart of a revamped midfield alongside new arrival Dan Neil.
Ferguson's Rangers connections
Ferguson, who starred for Rangers at academy level, has strong family ties to the club—his uncle Barry Ferguson is a legendary figure from his years in the Ibrox midfield. The Scotland international faces an uncertain summer, with Bologna reportedly keen to cash in after his playing time in Serie A was reduced last season.
McInnes's summer rebuild
McInnes, who took over at Rangers earlier this year, has already overseen a significant squad overhaul. Lawrence Shankland arrived from Hearts, while Ross McCrorie, Ben Godfrey, and Ivor Pandur have also signed on at Ibrox. Adding Ferguson would represent a major statement of intent as Rangers look to challenge domestically and in Europe.
