Oi Polloi Revival: Manchester Brand Returns After Three Years

Manchester institution Oi Polloi is making a comeback three years after closing its Northern Quarter store, with original co-founder Nigel Lawson returning to lead the revival. The brand, known for its contemporary menswear, outdoor gear, and sportswear, will launch an online store in September.

Brand History and Closure

Founded in 2002 by Nigel Lawson and Steve Sanderson, Oi Polloi gained international recognition for stocking brands like Polo Ralph Lauren, Keen, and Patagonia, alongside its own-label items. The shop originally opened on Tib Street before moving to Thomas Street. Co-founder Steve once described Oi Polloi as having a 'working class identity with a magpie type aesthetic that's synonymous with Manchester'.

In 2021, JD Sports acquired the brand, but decided to close the Thomas Street store in 2023 as part of a business reshuffle. Liam Gallagher was among those who expressed devastation, declaring 'there is no GOD'.

Revival Plans

Ownership has now reverted to the original founders, with Nigel Lawson returning to helm the brand. Steve Sanderson has stepped away to focus on other projects. Nigel said: "After a period away from the industry, I'm really excited to be bringing Oi Pollio back. When the doors closed on Thomas Street, we always wanted to find a way to bring it back to life, it was just a matter of getting everything in place."

The relaunch will begin with an online store in September, offering a 'stripped-back selection made with the Oi Polloi magpie eye', including a return of their own-brand items. Nigel explained: "Some of the best-selling stuff we stocked was our own-label clothing. In the time I've been away, I've been bringing some newness in with that."

No Immediate Physical Store

There are no immediate plans for a physical store, with the success of the web store determining future directions. "We'll feel our way forwards from there," Nigel teased. Further details on product offerings and relaunch plans will be announced in the coming months.

Fans have responded positively online. On Instagram, one wrote: "Menswear heroes, cultural innovators and legacy creators. Life is being breathed into the industry!" Another commented: "This reopening is a real statement." One simply said: "God bless Oi Polloi."
