Robin Urton, a 61-year-old artist from Kansas City, has earned $4,881 (£3,600) by renting out rooms in her home to World Cup fans—despite admitting she is not a soccer fan. Living just 12 minutes from Kansas City Stadium, she capitalized on the influx of supporters for the tournament.
From Renovation to Rental Income
While renovating the upstairs suite of her Tudor-style home, Robin read reports about homeowners cashing in on the World Cup and decided to list her property on Airbnb. “It was a no-brainer,” she said. Unlike many hosts who vacate their homes during major events, Robin continues living alongside her guests. “I would have a hard time trusting complete strangers in my house if I weren’t there too,” she explained.
Cat Concierges and Global Visitors
Robin’s cats act as a friendly concierge, and guests love them. She has hosted visitors from Mexico and Argentina, including an Argentinian couple who helped her set up a Smart Lock. “The Argentinian couple were so friendly and sweet,” she said. Her property offers a large bedroom, kitchenette, dining area, living room, and private bathroom, plus an additional downstairs bedroom for two more guests.
Financial Impact and Future Plans
Robin began renting part of her home six years ago after a long-term housemate moved out, initially targeting nurses on short contracts. She earned significantly more than with a traditional lodger. From her first two World Cup bookings, she made around $700 (£531) and expects $3,208 (£2,434) in June alone, with a further $973 (£738) forecast for July. However, she notes that earnings estimates for hosts are overhyped: “The amount of money we were told homeowners could earn is definitely overhyped. But it’s still been a good opportunity for me, as it’s helping me afford to upgrade my house.” She would definitely rent out her house for future sporting events.
