Newcastle United suffered a significant setback over the weekend when Johan Manzambi chose to join Aston Villa instead of the Magpies. The 20-year-old Switzerland international had an offer accepted from Freiburg and agreed personal terms with Newcastle, but delayed his decision until after the World Cup. Following Switzerland's quarter-final defeat to Argentina on Sunday, Manzambi swiftly opted for Villa, citing higher wages and Champions League football.
This is the second time this summer Newcastle have been outbid by a Premier League rival after agreeing a deal, following Victor Munoz's move to Liverpool from Osasuna. Sporting director Ross Wilson must now turn to alternative targets.
Profile of the Target
Manzambi was described by Freiburg reporter Linus Uhrig as a 'great box-to-box player who can be helpful in offence and defence, with a really good shot and intelligent decision making.' Swiss football expert Craig King highlighted his versatility and fearlessness: 'It is a little unusual for a national team to call on a player that can be deployed in so many roles... When you add in the fearlessness, willingness to take on opponents and general work rate, you have quite the exciting player.'
Newcastle's transfer policy this summer suggests any replacement will be young and playing outside the Premier League. DataMB ranks Manzambi in the 96th percentile for progressive carries and 88th for key passes across Europe's top seven leagues. Similar profiles include Bologna's Lewis Ferguson, 26, and Bayer Leverkusen's Ibrahim Maza, 20, who impressed against Newcastle in the Champions League.
Impact on Transfer Strategy
While Ferguson was named Serie A's best midfielder two years ago, his age may not fit Newcastle's model. Maza, however, aligns with their focus on younger talent. Wilson will now target players with similar qualities to Manzambi, emphasising ball progression and creativity from midfield.
