Newcastle United have confirmed that goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos has rejoined Sevilla on a season-long loan for the 2026/27 campaign. The Greek international spent last season with the La Liga club, making 34 appearances and becoming a fan favourite with his performances.
Loan Move Instead of Permanent Transfer
It had been widely expected that Newcastle would look to capitalise on Vlachodimos' strong season by negotiating a permanent sale. However, the club announced on July 1, 2026, that the 32-year-old will instead spend another year at the Estadio Sanchez Pizjuan. In a club statement, Newcastle said: "Everybody at Newcastle United wishes Odysseas well during his time on loan."
Controversial Arrival and Limited Role
Vlachodimos joined Newcastle two years ago in a controversial £20 million deal from Nottingham Forest, with Elliot Anderson moving in the opposite direction for £35 million. The transfers were designed to help both clubs comply with the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules. Upon arrival, Vlachodimos expected to be second choice behind Nick Pope, but Newcastle retained Martin Dubravka as back-up, leaving the Greek as third choice. He made only one appearance for the Magpies, coming on as a substitute in a 1-0 Carabao Cup win over AFC Wimbledon.
Future Uncertain
Vlachodimos still has two years remaining on his Newcastle contract. It remains unclear where his long-term future lies after he returns from his second stint in Seville next summer.
