M&S Bank Customers Furious as Debit Card Payment Option Removed

M&S Bank customers have been left frustrated after the option to pay their credit card balances using debit cards was removed from its online banking service. The option appears to have been removed in recent weeks, with some people left struggling to pay their balance.

How to Pay Now

M&S Bank customers can pay off their credit card by using the "pay-by-bank" option. This involves logging into your credit card account, selecting your bank from a list of options, and then your credit card lender directs you to this bank to authorise your payment. This removes the need for a physical card to complete the transaction. Customers can also still pay their M&S Bank credit card bill by phone, through online banking with their regular bank, or by direct debit.

Customer Reactions

In a post published on Facebook, one customer asked: "Is anyone having problems paying their credit card bill? M&S have changed the payment set-up, yet again, but my bank doesn't come up as an option, either on the list or when I use the search button." In response, one person said: "It's ridiculous that they have taken away the paying by debit card option. I ring them now using the number on the back of the card, it takes 4 days for the money to go onto your balance." Another said: "I've payed by phone! But that was what we did years ago." However, others confirmed that different payment methods were working for them. One person commented: "Mine is taken direct debit every month. No hassle." Another said: "Paid this morning through internet banking same as every month."

Bank Statement

An M&S Bank spokesperson said: "Our customers are increasingly opting to use digital channels for their banking needs and in December 2024 we introduced a pay-by-bank option, making it even easier for customers to pay their credit card via the M&S Bank app. Most customers already use this option, which has now replaced debit card payments through our online channels."

Transfer to HSBC

It comes after M&S Bank was legally transferred over to HSBC earlier this month. The bank was acquired by HSBC in 2004 but has continued to operate under its own brand name. However, the high street lender has now been legally transferred to HSBC. The M&S Bank website explains: "We have transferred the business of M&S Bank to HSBC UK. This means that any accounts, products and services you previously held with M&S Bank, including any credit cards, personal loans, savings products, general insurance services and store cards, will now be provided by HSBC UK."
