Motherwell, Wishaw and Carluke MP Pamela Nash has expressed strong support for the UK Government’s Steel Strategy as the Steel Industry (Nationalisation) Bill progresses through Parliament. The Bill, which would grant the government authority to nationalise steel companies when necessary, had its third reading in the House of Commons this week.
Legislative Progress
The legislation builds on the existing Steel Strategy, aimed at securing the sector’s future and ensuring long-term sustainability. Following its approval by MPs, the Bill now moves to the House of Lords for further debate and scrutiny.
Nash’s Remarks
During the debate, Nash highlighted the steel industry’s significance to her constituency. She stated: “In Motherwell, we remain the home of steel in Scotland. This Bill provides a potential safety net for the Dalzell plate mill.” She emphasised the mill’s role in providing safe, well-paid jobs and developing apprentices for future generations of steel processing in Lanarkshire.
Nash added: “Steel is Motherwell’s heritage, and it is also a key part of our country’s progress. Steel is our thread in the fabric of the future of our country. Supporting the Dalzell plant is crucial not only for safeguarding existing jobs but also for ensuring the continued prosperity of our region.” She reaffirmed her commitment to supporting the industry and noted that the Labour Government has Dalzell at the centre of its UK Steel strategy.
Government Stance
Peter Kyle, Secretary of State for Business and Trade, said: “This Government believe in Britain’s steel future. This Bill will help turn that belief into reality. It will support the long-term vision for our UK steel industry, helping to bring domestic production back to sustainable levels and supporting our economic growth plans.”
