Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho could complicate the club's pursuit of Mateus Fernandes this summer. The West Ham midfielder has emerged as a key transfer target for United as they prepare for a return to Champions League football.
Midfield Priority for United
Midfield has become a priority area for Michael Carrick to strengthen. An agreement has already been reached with Atalanta for Ederson, but United want another central player, with Fernandes being the prime candidate. However, competition comes from Real Madrid, who confirmed Mourinho's appointment last week.
Spanish outlet Marca reports that Fernandes is 'highly regarded' by Mourinho, with Real Madrid prioritizing a midfielder this summer. They have also been linked with Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez.
United's Stance on Transfer Fee
United have made it clear to West Ham that they will not be held to ransom. The Hammers are demanding around £80 million despite their relegation from the Premier League. Fernandes has his heart set on a move to Old Trafford, but United's valuation falls short due to concerns about his inexperience at the top level. They are expected to bid later this week but are willing to wait for a fair price.
Fernandes' Performance and United's Revamp
The 21-year-old made 36 Premier League appearances for West Ham last season, scoring three goals and providing four assists. He previously impressed for Southampton in the 2024/25 season. United are set for a midfield revamp, with Casemiro having left and Manuel Ugarte expected to depart. Kobbie Mainoo has established himself under Carrick, and the new midfield could be built around him.
