Manchester United are facing a dilemma regarding Marcus Rashford's future as Barcelona have not officially informed the Red Devils whether they intend to trigger the forward's buy clause. The La Liga side have until June 15 to activate the £26 million deal after the 28-year-old spent the 2025/26 season on loan at Camp Nou.
Rashford's Loan Season at Barcelona
During his time at Barcelona, Rashford scored 14 goals and provided 14 assists in 47 appearances, helping the club win the Spanish top-flight title for the second consecutive season. Despite this productive campaign, reports emerged on Wednesday that Barcelona are expected to opt against signing Rashford on a permanent basis.
No Official Communication
However, according to the BBC, there has been no official communication between Barcelona and United regarding Rashford. The Catalan club have not informed United of their decision, and the three-week period between the end of the World Cup and the beginning of pre-season is now seen as the likely timeframe for resolving the attacker's future.
Barcelona recently spent £69.3 million to sign Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon, and they are adamant that a final decision on Rashford will come before the £26 million deadline next week. United have stated they are not willing to renegotiate the terms, and sources close to Rashford believe the deadline will pass without an agreement, meaning he would return to United for pre-season.
Interest from Other Clubs
That scenario depends on whether another club enters the race during the World Cup, where Rashford has the chance to impress potential suitors. Arsenal and Bayern Munich have shown interest in the England international this summer, and United are hoping to offload him to generate funds.
Rashford's Relationship with Carrick
Rashford is said to have a strong relationship with current United head coach Michael Carrick, having worked alongside him as both a player and a manager. In April, Carrick stated that no final decision had been made on Rashford's future. "There are decisions to be made in time on certain things. Marcus is in that situation," Carrick said. "At this point in time, nothing has been decided. It will be at a certain point because it has to be, but at this stage nothing has been decided."
Even if no buyer emerges during the World Cup, Rashford's future is expected to be resolved between the end of England's World Cup campaign and his return to pre-season at United.
