Marcus Rashford Agreement Reached as Man Utd Transfer U-Turn Planned

Manchester United have reached an agreement with Marcus Rashford that could see him return to the first team under Michael Carrick, though both parties would prefer a different outcome. The club is also planning a dramatic shift in transfer strategy, moving away from expensive Premier League signings after balking at an £80m price tag for West Ham's Mateus Fernandes.

Rashford's Uncertain Future

Rashford, currently starring for England at World Cup 2026, scored in the opening group-stage win against Croatia and has looked lively on the left wing. His future at Old Trafford has been in doubt after a loan spell at Barcelona ended without the £26m option to buy being exercised, and Barcelona instead signed Anthony Gordon from Newcastle. Under previous managers Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim, Rashford found himself exiled from the first team.

However, new boss Michael Carrick, who was Rashford's teammate for two years, could offer the winger a route back into the squad. According to The Daily Mail, discussions have taken place, and while a return is possible, both United and the player agree they would rather avoid that scenario.

Transfer Strategy Overhaul

Elsewhere, The Sun reports that United are planning to change their approach to signing established Premier League players after a huge hike in asking prices. Carrick's side had been linked with West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes, who was relegated last season, but they turned down his £80m price tag. Tottenham have since agreed an £85m deal for Fernandes instead.

Manchester City's club-record £116m deal to sign Elliot Anderson, expected to be completed soon, is another factor driving the shift. Top-flight players now command astronomical fees, prompting United to turn their attention to more budget-friendly, raw options. However, other targets like Alex Scott and Adam Wharton are also valued at an eye-watering £80m.

Ederson Arrival Confirmed

One move has already been sealed: Brazilian midfielder Ederson will arrive this month following Casemiro's departure. This signing is part of Carrick's plan to build a squad capable of competing in the Champions League after United's top-four finish last season.

With the summer transfer window well underway, United are backing Carrick in his first full campaign as permanent boss. The club's new strategy reflects a desire to avoid the inflated prices of Premier League talent and instead invest in emerging prospects.
