Manchester United have completed the free transfer signing of Wales international goalkeeper Karl Darlow from Leeds United. The 35-year-old has agreed a two-year contract at Old Trafford, with the club holding an option to extend by a further year.
Darlow's Move Across the Pennines
Darlow joins Manchester United following the expiry of his contract at Leeds United, where he made 38 appearances across all competitions. He played a pivotal role in Leeds' 2024/25 Championship title-winning campaign and was instrumental in helping the club secure their Premier League status last season, finishing as manager Daniel Farke's first-choice goalkeeper.
Leeds United confirmed the departure in a statement, noting that Darlow was offered a new deal to remain at Elland Road. The statement read: "Leeds United can confirm Karl Darlow has left the club upon the expiration of his contract to pursue an opportunity elsewhere. Despite the offer of a new deal to remain in West Yorkshire, the goalkeeper wished to explore a different challenge and leaves the Whites with the best wishes of everyone at Elland Road."
Reaction from Darlow and Manchester United
Upon signing, Darlow expressed his pride: "I am extremely proud to sign for Manchester United. I'm joining an excellent group of goalkeepers and I'm really looking forward to all pushing each other to ensure that we maintain the highest standards, which this club demands."
Jason Wilcox, Manchester United's director of football, added: "Karl has proven his ability to perform at the highest level, his work ethic and determined personality make him a really strong addition to our squad. We are delighted to add a player of his quality and experience to our excellent goalkeeping group."
Impact on Manchester United's Goalkeeping Department
Darlow's arrival provides experienced cover for first-choice goalkeeper Senne Lammens. Lammens is currently on a three-week break following Belgium's World Cup campaign, meaning Darlow is expected to feature heavily in Manchester United's pre-season preparations. The club's first pre-season fixture is against Welsh side Wrexham in Helsinki on July 18.
The former Newcastle United stopper is one of several Wales internationals to have moved to Manchester United in recent months, following the earlier capture of Harry Wilson. Darlow's experience at both Championship and Premier League levels is seen as a valuable asset to the squad.
