Manchester United are poised for a second lucrative sell-on windfall from Alejandro Garnacho's potential departure from Chelsea, following reports that the Blues are prepared to sell the winger after just one season. The 22-year-old Argentine joined Chelsea from United last summer for £40 million but struggled to make an impact as the club finished 10th in the Premier League, missing out on European football entirely.
Chelsea willing to sell Garnacho for £42.5m
According to the Press Association, Chelsea are open to offers in the region of £42.5 million for Garnacho. United negotiated a 10 per cent sell-on clause in the original transfer agreement, meaning they would receive a cut of any future fee. Reports from Italy suggest that Roma are interested, with the Serie A club's Champions League qualification potentially enabling a permanent move, though a loan with an option to buy is also being considered.
Pure profit under PSR
Since Garnacho came through United's academy, joining from Atletico Madrid for just £100,000 in 2020, the initial £40 million fee from Chelsea was registered as pure profit under the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). Any sell-on income from a future transfer would also be pure profit, providing a further financial boost to United.
Mason Greenwood's potential move to Fenerbahce
Meanwhile, reports from Turkey indicate that Fenerbahce are expected to sign Mason Greenwood from Marseille for €40 million (£34 million) plus €2 million in bonuses. United sold Greenwood to Marseille in the summer of 2024 and negotiated a sell-on clause believed to be between 40 and 50 per cent. According to ESPN, both Fenerbahce and Atletico Madrid have struck agreements with Marseille. United would pocket €14 million (£11.9 million) if Greenwood moves to Turkey, or €15.7 million (£13.3 million) if he returns to Madrid, where he previously spent time on loan at Getafe.
Greenwood's form earns De Zerbi praise
Greenwood has scored 48 goals in 81 appearances for Marseille. Former Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi praised his potential, saying: "I see him every day, he has huge potential. I don't see any other players in Europe at the same level. He has the potential to win the Ballon d'Or. It will be up to him to decide whether he wants to do everything he can to fight for it or not."
