Manchester United have moved ahead of Arsenal in the pursuit of West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes, with the Red Devils now leading the race for the £80 million-rated star. A midfield rebuild is underway at Old Trafford, and a deal for Atalanta's Ederson has already been agreed. United are targeting at least two midfielders this summer, potentially three if Manuel Ugarte departs.
Fernandes Emerges as Key Target
Elliot Anderson of Nottingham Forest was a top target, but he favors a move to Manchester City. Forest are demanding a British record transfer fee, and United are reluctant to enter a bidding war. Fernandes, who impressed in east London last season, is expected to leave West Ham just a year after joining from Southampton. The Hammers are seeking £80 million for the Portuguese international, and United are increasingly confident of striking a deal.
According to The Times, Michael Carrick's side have moved clear of Arsenal in the race. Fernandes is admired at the Emirates, and Mikel Arteta wants to bolster his midfield after winning the Premier League title. However, the Gunners are unwilling to meet West Ham's valuation. Fabrizio Romano reports that talks have taken place between United officials and Fernandes' agent, Jorge Mendes, with an initial bid expected soon.
Competition from Real Madrid and PSG
United could face competition from Real Madrid, where Jose Mourinho has returned as manager. The Portuguese coach is interested in signing Fernandes. Paris Saint-Germain have also been linked, with reports in France suggesting they have begun talks to take him to Parc des Princes. Fernandes was signed by West Ham from Southampton for £38 million plus £4 million in add-ons last year. A move to Old Trafford would see him link up with compatriots Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot.
Reports indicate that United captain Bruno Fernandes has personally recommended his namesake to the club's board as they prepare for a return to the Champions League next season.
