Manchester City have secured approximately £427,000 from the permanent transfer of academy left-back Tom Galvez to Eredivisie side Go Ahead Eagles. The 21-year-old, who joined City's academy from Watford at age 16, never made a senior appearance under Pep Guardiola but has represented Finland at international level.
Loan Success and International Recognition
Galvez spent last season on loan at Cambuur in the Dutch second division, where he was a regular starter and helped the club win promotion back to the top flight. His performances caught the attention of Go Ahead Eagles, who finished 12th in the Eredivisie last season and notably beat Aston Villa in the first stage of the Europa League.
Despite his lack of senior minutes at City, Galvez earned several caps for the Finnish national team, making his international debut while still an academy player. The defender now aims to build on his momentum from the Cambuur loan at his new club.
Clauses in the Deal
As is standard practice for academy player sales, Manchester City inserted two key clauses into the transfer agreement. According to chief Manchester City writer Simon Bajkowski, City will receive 30% of any profit Go Ahead Eagles make should they sell Galvez in the future. Additionally, the Premier League champions have included an option to buy the defender back, allowing them to re-sign him under predetermined terms.
These clauses are designed to protect City's long-term interests while allowing young players to develop elsewhere. The sell-on clause ensures City benefit from any future increase in Galvez's market value, while the buy-back option gives them first refusal if he develops into a top-tier player.
Summer Transfer Window Activity
The Galvez fee pushes Manchester City's total player sales for the summer transfer window past the £25 million mark. This total includes income from the departures of Manu Akanji, Nathan Ake, and Jahmai Simpson-Pusey, though specific fees for those players were not disclosed.
On the spending side, City have invested heavily, committing £137.5 million on the purchases of Elliot Anderson and Mathys Detourbet. The club's net spend stands at approximately £112 million as they continue to reshape their squad under Guardiola.
