Manchester City have agreed a British-record fee to sign Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest, with the deal worth a staggering £130 million. The transfer eclipses the previous British record of £125 million paid by Liverpool to Newcastle United for Alexander Isak last summer.
Negotiations and Agreement
Nottingham Forest had played hardball during the early weeks of the summer transfer window, determined to secure more than the £125 million benchmark. According to The Telegraph, City saw an initial offer rejected but eventually reached an agreement for the 23-year-old midfielder, who has been their top target this summer. Despite the enormous price tag, City were not deterred.
Anderson has been granted permission to undergo a medical in New York on Friday, though the deal remains subject to personal terms. Thomas Tuchel, the England manager, has stated he will not prevent his players from completing moves during the World Cup.
Anderson's Rise
Anderson joined Forest from Newcastle United in 2023 for £35 million, a move that saw the Magpies reluctantly part with an academy product. Since then, he has continued to develop and has always been destined to generate a substantial profit for Forest. He made his England debut in September and has started both of the World Cup matches so far, playing alongside Declan Rice against Croatia and Ghana. He is expected to retain his role against Panama on Saturday.
Post-Guardiola Era at City
Manchester City are entering a new era after Pep Guardiola, with Enzo Maresca expected to become the new head coach at the Etihad. Anderson is seen as a player who fits into Maresca's system and will also help meet the club's homegrown player quota. City are also aware that Rodri, now 30, is continually linked with Real Madrid and could consider his future once his contract expires.
Midfield Transition
City have struggled to integrate central midfielders in recent years. Kalvin Phillips is an example of a highly-rated English player who moved to Manchester but found game time limited due to Rodri's dominance. However, with players like Bernardo Silva moving on, Anderson is expected to play a significant role as City aim for a smooth transition following Guardiola's departure.
