Lloyds Bank will shut nine branches this week, marking another blow to the UK high street. The banking group has already closed more than 1,547 branches between 2015 and June 2026 as it adapts to the growing preference for online banking.
Why Are Branches Closing?
Across the banking sector, many providers have reduced their physical presence as mobile banking becomes the norm. Lloyds customers can still use branches under the Lloyds Banking Group's brands, including Halifax, for everyday transactions where services are available.
A Lloyds spokesperson told MoneyWeek: “With access to one of the biggest branch networks in the UK, alongside local banking options like our Community Bankers, the Post Office, PayPoint, plus our leading apps and 24/7 messaging service, we offer our customers more choice and convenience than ever before.”
Industry-Wide Trend
Lloyds is not alone in reducing its network. Which? estimates around 6,693 bank branches closed across the UK between January 2015 and January 2026, with Santander, Barclays, and NatWest also announcing significant closures.
Campaigners have raised concerns that ongoing closures could leave elderly customers, small businesses, and rural communities with fewer face-to-face banking options, despite the expansion of digital services and banking hubs.
