A Liverpool city centre venue that recently closed its doors has announced it will reopen under new ownership. OMG Liverpool, located on Victoria Street, revealed on June 2 that it would be closing and ceased trading on June 6, with many believing the closure would be permanent.
Venue History and Events
The LGBTQ+ space, located in the city's Pride Quarter, spans two floors and offers a mix of drag entertainment, live DJs, themed and karaoke nights throughout the week. The venue has previously welcomed The Cheeky Girls, RuPaul's Drag Race's Paige Three, Baga Chipz and Katie Price, among a host of others, to the stage.
The club's Thursday student nights also became somewhat of a rite of passage for many in the queer community who come to Liverpool for university. However, this won't be the case anymore, as Saturday, June 6, was the venue's last night under previous ownership.
Founder's Statement
Last week, founder Mathew Causon told the ECHO: "After eight incredible years, we're sad to announce that OMG Liverpool will be closing its doors for good. This hasn't been an easy decision. For the past two years, we've been trying to find the right management team to continue giving the venue the love, energy and care it deserves, but sadly, we haven't been able to find the right fit."
"OMG Liverpool has been home to so many unforgettable nights, celebrations, friendships, performances and memories. We're incredibly proud of everything the venue has been, and even more grateful to every customer, performer, DJ, team member and supporter who has been part of the journey."
Mathew said the OMG brand would continue to expand elsewhere and that the Liverpool site was up for sale. The final day of operations fell on Saturday, June 6, with a farewell party.
New Ownership Announced
But an update from OMG issued today (Friday, June 12) has announced the venue has been bought by a "highly respected" businessman and that the local LGBT+ community can continue to thrive under new owners. The new owner's identity has not been disclosed and a reopening date is yet to be announced.
The statement said: "We are delighted to announce that we have secured a highly respected and well-known LGBT+ Business man to take over the Site of OMG Liverpool. This ensures that the venue will not only remain an important part of the LGBT+ community but will continue to thrive under ownership that understands, values, and champions the community it serves."
