Leeds Refuse to Name Man Utd as Darlow Leaves for Old Trafford

Leeds United refused to name bitter rivals Manchester United after confirming goalkeeper Karl Darlow had left the club for Old Trafford. The Red Devils made the former Newcastle stopper their second addition of the summer on Tuesday, July 14, 2026.

Darlow's Move to Manchester United

Darlow, 35, is expected to add competition to Manchester United's goalkeeping ranks, with Senne Lammens remaining as their number one. He moves to Manchester after three years at Elland Road, during which he played 38 times for the club.

In announcing his exit, the Yorkshire club refused to even name the Red Devils as his next employers, owing to the bitter relationship between the two sides. A statement from Leeds read: “Leeds United can confirm Karl Darlow has left the club upon the expiration of his contract to pursue an opportunity elsewhere.”

Leeds' Statement Avoids Naming Man Utd

The statement continued: “Despite the offer of a new deal to remain in West Yorkshire, the goalkeeper wished to explore a different challenge and leaves the Whites with the best wishes of everyone at Elland Road.” It added: “Thank you Karl for your dedicated service to Leeds United, we wish you and your family the best for the future.”

Darlow is the latest in a long line of players to swap Leeds for Manchester, albeit he is the first in 22 years to make the move. Gordon Strachan, Eric Cantona, Rio Ferdinand and Alan Smith are among the high-profile names to have transferred directly between the two clubs.

Darlow's Reaction and United's Plans

Speaking after his move was made official, Darlow said: “I am extremely proud to sign for Manchester United. I'm joining an excellent group of goalkeepers and I'm really looking forward to all pushing each other to ensure that we maintain the highest standards, which this club demands.” He added: “This is a really special opportunity; everyone can see what an exciting time it is for the club and I cannot wait to play my part in supporting my team mates and helping to drive the group forwards.”

United's director of football Jason Wilcox added: “Karl has proven his ability to perform at the highest level, his work ethic and determined personality make him a really strong addition to our squad. We are delighted to add a player of his quality and experience to our excellent goalkeeping group.”

Away from Darlow, United have also chosen to add to their midfield options this summer, after completing deals for Andre Santos and Youri Tielemans from Chelsea and Aston Villa respectively for a combined £85 million.
