New Larkhall Leisure Centre Gets Green Light from Council Committee
Larkhall Leisure Centre Approved by Council Committee

South Lanarkshire Council’s Executive committee gave the green light on Wednesday, June 24, for the replacement of Larkhall Leisure Centre as part of the Glasgow City Region City Deal. The committee approved the Full Business Case and agreed to seek £3 million in City Deal grant funding towards the £27.827 million project.

Community Concerns Addressed

Councillor Richard Nelson (Larkhall) welcomed the report but sought clarification to ease local anxiety. He noted that at a community council meeting, it was reported that this was the last big hurdle, creating uncertainty. Nelson confirmed that enabling works are already underway on site, and he asked whether the approval was merely a formal governance and funding stage rather than a fresh decision. Council officers confirmed that the plan is not a reconsideration but a governance and assurance framework, and the full business case will now be submitted to the Glasgow City Region.

Councillors Welcome Progress

Councillor Ross Clark (Larkhall) also welcomed the progress, highlighting the importance of effective communication with the public to prevent rumours and anxiety. He stressed the need for a proper community communication plan and keeping the project on track to avoid delays.

Facilities and Sustainability

The new leisure centre will replace the existing sports centre with a modern facility designed for the growing community. Plans include a 25-metre, six-lane swimming pool with an adjustable-depth floor and spectator seating, a wellness suite with sauna and steam rooms, a state-of-the-art gym, a multi-purpose fitness and dance studio, and a three-court sports hall suitable for badminton, pickleball, and five-a-side football. The building will feature fully accessible changing facilities and sustainable design elements such as energy-efficient construction, improved insulation, and natural lighting.

Part of Wider Development

The replacement leisure centre is part of the Larkhall Community Growth Area project, one of South Lanarkshire’s infrastructure schemes within the £1.13 billion Glasgow City Region City Deal programme. The project supports the delivery of around 1,700 new homes in Larkhall by providing essential community facilities. According to the council report, the leisure centre is considered an essential element of the area’s infrastructure and a key requirement for full development of the Community Growth Area.

Construction Timeline

Enabling works began on site in May, including drainage, installation of an electricity substation, and partial demolition. Subject to necessary approvals, main construction is expected to start in August. The project is being delivered through Hub South West Scotland, with BAM Construction appointed. The council expects the new leisure centre to be completed and open during spring or summer 2028. The existing leisure centre will remain operational during construction to minimise disruption.
