Jurgen Klopp Set to Discuss Germany Job, Could Work with Florian Wirtz
Klopp Set for Germany Talks, Could Coach Wirtz

Jurgen Klopp is set for talks with the German Football Association (DFB) about becoming the next manager of the national team, a move that would bring him face-to-face with Liverpool star Florian Wirtz. The DFB confirmed on Friday that they will hold discussions with Klopp following Julian Nagelsmann's departure after Germany's shock World Cup exit.

Germany's World Cup Exit Sparks Change

Germany were eliminated in the round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup, losing on penalties to Paraguay. Nagelsmann, who took charge in September 2023, stepped down after the defeat. His exit has opened the door for Klopp, who has a clause in his contract as Red Bull's Global Head of Soccer allowing him to accept the Germany job.

Klopp's History with Wirtz

Klopp has been a vocal admirer of Wirtz, who joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen for a British record £115 million in 2025. Wirtz had a difficult first season at Anfield, scoring seven goals and providing eight assists in 49 appearances under then-manager Arne Slot, who was sacked in May and replaced by Andoni Iraola.

Speaking to German broadcaster RTL about Wirtz's arrival, Klopp said: "It will be really, really great. I'm sure of it... It's very difficult to strengthen them when you're champions. But Liverpool have managed that. They've signed an exceptional talent in Florian Wirtz."

In October, after Wirtz struggled to adapt, Klopp vowed on The Diary of a CEO podcast: "You all will eat your words if you use the wrong words with Florian Wirtz. He's an incredible talent and player." He added to RTL: "I don't have to worry about Florian Wirtz because his quality is so outstanding."

Klopp's Vision for Wirtz

While working as a pundit at the World Cup for Magenta, Klopp hinted at how he would deploy Wirtz. "The important thing is that we involve him in the game. There were moments against Curacao when I thought, just give him the ball," Klopp explained after Germany's 2-1 win over Ivory Coast. "If you really want Flo Wirtz to get into a rhythm, if you want the place to really be buzzing, then give him the ball, because that's when he feels completely at home."

Klopp emphasised that Wirtz should not drop deep to collect the ball but instead be positioned to create space for teammates. "He shouldn't drop back and get the ball from his own penalty area... we have to find moments where we can use this position, because with his positioning he creates a lot of space for the players next to him, for the full-backs and for everyone who can make runs into those spaces."

What's Next for Klopp and Germany

The DFB has not set a timeline for the talks, but Klopp is considered the top candidate. His appointment would mark a return to international management after his successful stint at Liverpool, where he won the Premier League and Champions League. Wirtz, 23, is expected to be a key figure in Klopp's plans should he take over.
