ITVX has become the new free-to-air home of the Harry Potter film franchise, offering all eight main series films and three Fantastic Beasts movies for free streaming, thanks to a new deal with Warner Bros. The announcement comes as the franchise celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone having premiered in cinemas in November 2001.
Free Streaming Deal
ITV confirmed its status as the free-to-air destination for the Harry Potter films, making them available on ITVX. Darren Nartey, ITV's head of content acquisitions, said he was "extremely proud to make these iconic British films available for both old and new fans to stream, for free, during the summer holidays and beyond."
The magical film franchise has grossed over $9.6 billion worldwide at the box office. The story follows orphaned boy Harry Potter, played by Daniel Radcliffe, who discovers he is a wizard on his 11th birthday.
Franchise Milestones
The books were released between 1997 and 2007. Ten years ago, in 2016, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child book—containing the special rehearsal edition script of the play—was published to coincide with the official opening of the stage production in London's West End and Harry Potter's birthday.
Last year, fans received more good news with the announcement of an audiobook series featuring a star-studded cast, including Hugh Laurie as Albus Dumbledore, Matthew Macfadyen as Lord Voldemort, Riz Ahmed as Professor Snape, Michelle Gomez as Professor McGonagall, and Cush Jumbo as narrator.
Upcoming TV Series
A television series adaptation is also in development. The first season, adapted from J.K. Rowling’s first novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, launched earlier than expected on HBO Max last Christmas. Further seasons will cover her other novels, with Rowling serving as executive producer.
