Popular clothing company Keates of Witney, which traded as Blossom Bridal & Formal Dress Store, has confirmed its closure after 114 years in business. The historic Oxfordshire retailer cited 'rising operating costs' for shutting its high street site.
End of an Era
The company was officially dissolved via voluntary strike-off on Tuesday, June 16, after more than a century in Witney, South Oxfordshire. Founded in 1914 as a menswear retailer, it later expanded into the bridal market. The menswear section was axed in 2019 amid a 'decline in support for shops on the high street from the general public', according to the Oxford Mail.
The entire site closed to shoppers in August 2025, with the owner citing 'rising operational costs and increasing online competition'. The decision was described as 'incredibly difficult' in a public statement.
Gratitude to Customers
'We want to extend our deepest gratitude to every single person who has supported our small business over the years,' the owner added. 'Whether you found your dream dress with us, hired a suit, or simply cheered us on - thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You've made our journey truly special.'
Wider Economic Pressures
Company failures have risen across the first half of 2026 due to economic pressures linked to the conflict in the Middle East. Insolvencies rose slightly in April, with 2,085 companies entering a formal insolvency process – a figure 2% higher than March 2026 and up 3% on April 2025. Compulsory liquidations increased by 19% compared to March, while administrations fell by 21% month on month, despite remaining significantly higher than for the same period in 2025.
Both independent and chain businesses have been impacted. Quiz, the latest retailer to confirm the closure of its UK portfolio, shut all its branches last month. The hospitality sector has also struggled with rising operating costs, with Franco Manca and The Real Greek among the big names launching restructuring schemes in recent weeks.
