Halifax Responds to Customer Fury Over Branch Closures

Halifax has issued an update regarding changes to its branch services after a customer voiced frustration over the closure of a Liverpool branch. The bank responded to the complaint but the customer deemed the reply insufficient, threatening to leave the bank.

Customer Complaint Over Hunts Cross Closure

The customer reached out to Halifax to question the closure of the branch at the Hunts Cross shopping centre in Liverpool, which shut permanently on June 8. Halifax has closed 25 branches throughout June 2026. The bank responded: "Branch decisions are based on a range of factors, including how customers are choosing to bank and the availability of nearby services. You can find information about branch closures and alternative banking options here." The bank provided a link to its website with guidance on closures.

The customer was unimpressed, stating: "That's not good enough for me. I've been banking with Halifax since I was about 13 and this is the first time I want to leave and join another bank. End of the day cash is king and you are just pushing people away from that so I think it's time to leave." Halifax invited the customer to send a direct message to further explain their concerns, but the customer said they had already set out their complaint, asking why the bank was closing local branches "where people cash money in." Halifax provided a similar response, stating: "Branch decisions are based on a range of factors, including how customers use our services and the availability of alternative banking options nearby."

More Branch Closures Planned

Further branch closures are scheduled for September, October, and November 2026, including the Huyton branch in Liverpool, which will close on November 4. In a significant change affecting all customers, Halifax is rebranding under the Lloyds banner. Halifax is part of Lloyds Banking Group, alongside Lloyds Bank and Bank of Scotland.

Guidance on the Halifax website explains: "The vast majority of Halifax branches will either rebrand to Lloyds, or you'll be served by an existing Lloyds branch in that community. If there are any changes to your branch, we’ll let you know directly."
