Everton are on the verge of completing their second summer signing after a breakthrough in negotiations with Middlesbrough for midfielder Hayden Hackney. The deal, which could be finalised this week, is expected to cost an initial £16.5m, with add-ons potentially taking the total to £25m.
Breakthrough in Talks
The Blues have made Hackney a priority target this summer, holding weeks of discussions with Middlesbrough. Progress over the weekend led to agreement on the price and structure of the transfer, with both clubs optimistic that the move can be completed in the coming days.
Hackney, 24, is entering the final 12 months of his contract at the Riverside. He was named the Championship Player of the Year last season, a campaign in which his influence was so significant that Middlesbrough's form dipped when he missed the run-in through injury.
Spying Case and Play-Off Heartbreak
His fitness was a key concern in the spying case that saw Southampton expelled from the play-offs after they defeated Middlesbrough. Hackney returned as a second-half substitute in the final against Hull City but could not prevent a defeat that dashed promotion hopes.
That failure, combined with his contract situation, made an exit likely this summer. Everton moved quickly to secure an advantage, helped by Hackney's preference for a move to Merseyside.
Deal Structure and Previous Offers
Negotiations were not straightforward, with several Everton offers rejected before the recent breakthrough. The ECHO understands the fee structure includes an initial £16.5m, with performance-related clauses that could push the total to £25m.
Hackney would become Everton's second signing of the summer, following the permanent acquisition of Merlin Rohl from Freiburg for around £18m, triggered by Premier League survival.
Further Midfield Reinforcements Expected
The club is expected to continue exploring the midfield market, identified as a priority area. Idrissa Gueye's future remains uncertain, with the 36-year-old's contract expiring while he represents Senegal at the World Cup.
