Edinburgh Airport has issued a reminder to parents flying with children this summer, urging them to "double-check" airline rules and prepare for security procedures. With school summer holidays now underway, the airport expects a surge in passenger numbers and has released a set of "top tips" to help families navigate the travel experience smoothly.
Security Checks for Pushchairs and Prams
According to the airport's official website, parents should be aware that pushchairs, prams, and buggies are permitted through security, but may require additional screening. Officials stated: "Pushchairs, prams and buggies are all allowed through security; however, you may need to lift your child out so the chair can be properly searched." This process can take extra time, so travellers are advised to plan accordingly.
Boarding and Baggage Guidance
Boarding typically begins approximately 40 minutes before departure. Many airlines allow families to board first, and if travelling with a buggy or pram, staff will usually take it at the boarding gate. The airport advises passengers to have boarding passes ready—either printed or on a mobile device—and to pack essentials before reaching security. It also recommends double-checking with the airline regarding the number of bags allowed and items permitted in hand luggage.
Dedicated Family Lane at Security
Edinburgh Airport offers a dedicated family lane at security, clearly signposted near the e-gates. This lane provides extra space and time for families to pass through, with staff available to assist if needed. The airport encourages parents to use this facility to reduce stress.
Avoid Last-Minute Rushes
In a key tip, the airport warns parents not to wait until boarding is called before heading to the gate. "You'll be surprised at how many people wait until their flight is boarding before dashing to their gate. With a family that dash could easily become a whole lot more stressful," the advice reads. Instead, families should monitor screens for gate information and listen for announcements, then proceed to the gate as soon as it is announced.
These guidelines aim to help families enjoy a smoother and less stressful start to their summer holidays from Edinburgh Airport.
