Durham Women FC Saved by South Shields Chairman Thompson

Durham Women FC, a Women's Super League 2 side, has been saved from extinction after local businessman and South Shields FC chairman Geoff Thompson acquired a majority shareholding in the club. The takeover was finalized just days before the club's 21-day deadline to find a buyer or investor, which was announced earlier this month.

Urgent Rescue Deal

The club had disclosed that it could not guarantee sufficient cash flow and finances to cover the upcoming season, facing closure after nearly 20 years of operation. However, Thompson, who recently saw a consortium led by ORY Investment Holding buy a majority stake in South Shields for an undisclosed sum, stepped in at the 11th hour.

A club statement confirmed: "Durham Women is pleased to announce that local businessman and South Shields FC Chairman and co-owner Geoff Thompson, with backing from his co-investor at SSFC, has agreed to acquire a majority shareholding in the club, securing its future for the 2026/27 season and beyond."

Continuity and Growth

As part of the acquisition, club founders Lee Sanders and Dawn Hepple will remain as shareholders, while the existing executive management team will continue to lead day-to-day operations. The statement added: "This investment marks an exciting new chapter for Durham Women FC, providing a strong foundation for continued growth on and off the pitch."

Thompson, who has been chairman of South Shields since 2015 and oversaw a remarkable transformation, said: "With a decision required within a matter of days, the overriding priority was to safeguard Durham Women FC and protect its long-term future. We firmly believe the club plays a crucial role within the local community and deserves every opportunity to grow, progress, and succeed."

Investment in Women's Football

Thompson expressed gratitude to his co-investor Jason Ye, stating: "Together, we share a strong belief in the future of women's football. The women’s game continues to grow at an exceptional pace, and we are confident that Durham Women FC is well positioned to be part of this exciting journey."

Dawn Hepple, co-founder of Durham Women FC, said: "We’re delighted to have Geoff and his team stepping up and securing an exciting future for the club. The support we’ve received from our staff, players and supporters throughout this process has been incredible, and we’re truly grateful for it." She also thanked Patrick and Frances Connolly for their support over the past three years.

Lee Sanders added: "After what quickly became a difficult situation to deal with, in a very short period of time, we’re delighted to have a partner at the club who understands the region and North East football, and has the vision, knowledge and support system to help us realise all the ambitious plans we have for the club moving forward."
