Cost of Living Crisis Fuels Nostalgia for Simple Seaside Summers
Cost of Living Crisis Fuels Nostalgia for Simple Summers

The cost of living crisis is driving families in the UK to seek less expensive holiday options, relying on childhood nostalgia for inspiration. Research by Heart Bingo found that four in five people believe summer holidays were better when they were growing up.

Simple Pleasures Make Summers Magical

Most respondents say simple pleasures made summer more enjoyable when they were younger, describing childhood summers as more magical and less stressful. These holidays are where their best childhood memories were made.

Asked what they miss most about childhood summers, people cited spending time outdoors all day and family holidays. Almost half say spending time with friends face-to-face is what they miss most about pre-smartphone summers.

Seaside Emerges as Defining Memory

The seaside emerged as the defining memory of the British summer: 40% named a trip to the coast as the childhood activity that brings back the happiest memories. When it comes to the quintessential British seaside experience, fish and chips by the coast is the tradition that makes people happiest overall.

Most believe outdoor play is becoming a lost part of childhood, and nearly three quarters think children today have fewer opportunities for the kind of spontaneous, unstructured adventures that defined their own summers.

Reassurance in Simplicity

A Heart Bingo spokesperson said: "When people think back to their happiest summers, they rarely talk about expensive experiences. They remember the simple things, days spent outdoors, family holidays, trips to the seaside, time with friends. What's striking is how strongly those memories are tied to freedom, connection and being present, none of which carry a price tag."

"In a world where budgets are stretched and life feels busier than ever, there is something genuinely reassuring in that. The best summers don't have to be the most expensive ones."
