Michael Carrick Ends Man Utd's Long-Standing Pre-Season Tour Tradition
Carrick Scraps Man Utd Pre-Season Tours Abroad

Michael Carrick is already showing his authority in the Manchester United hotseat as he prepares to begin work at Old Trafford. The new boss, who signed a two-year deal to stay on as manager in May, has chosen to scrap the club's long-standing tradition of pre-season tours to distant destinations. Instead, United have committed to a European tour this summer.

End of an Era

The Premier League giants have travelled to locations such as Asia, North America, and Australia every pre-season since 2002. However, with a return to Champions League football next season, Carrick is keen to reduce the risk of fatigue from long-haul travel. The decision marks a significant shift in approach, prioritising player recovery over commercial ventures abroad.

Pre-Season Schedule

The club confirmed that their summer friendly programme will conclude with a clash against AC Milan in Wroclaw on August 15. This brings the curtain down on a six-match series, which kicks off with a fixture against Wrexham in Helsinki on July 18. United will then take on Rosenborg in Norway on July 24 before squaring up against Atletico Madrid at Solna's Strawberry Arena on August 1. They will remain in Sweden to face European champions Paris Saint-Germain on August 8 before heading to Dublin's Croke Park to meet Leeds just four days later.

Sporting Director's Comments

Speaking following confirmation of the Milan fixture, sporting director Jason Wilcox said: "We're excited to be concluding our pre-season tour in Wroclaw, Poland, with a big game against AC Milan. With fixtures now confirmed across five countries and six fantastic cities, these matches will provide strong preparation for the 2026-27 season and a valuable opportunity to connect with our incredible fans across Europe."

Commercial Considerations

Pre-season tours abroad have become a widely adopted means of generating income and raising a club's global profile. However, a number of United supporters would argue the club has become increasingly focused on commercial gain at the expense of on-pitch performance in recent years. By staying in Europe and reducing the travel burden, this summer's pre-season arrangements signal a notable shift in approach.

Fan Reaction

After 25 consecutive summers of jetting off to the other side of the globe, one season spent closer to home is unlikely to see United fade from the international spotlight. Particularly if that reduction in squad fatigue plays a meaningful role in helping United challenge for silverware. Following two seasons absent from Champions League football, that is a compromise the vast majority of supporters would gladly accept if it meant competing once again on Europe's grandest stage.
