Blue Badge holders are being warned that they must renew their permits at least 84 days before expiry or risk losing their parking rights. The Blue Badge scheme, which helps people with mobility issues park closer to their destination, requires renewal every three years. Using an expired badge can result in a fine of up to £1,000 for misuse.
Record Numbers of Blue Badge Holders in England
As of March 2025, the number of Blue Badge parking permits in England reached a record 3.07 million, an increase of 228,000 (8%) from the previous year. This means 5.2% of England's population now holds these permits. Around 39% of holders are automatically entitled to badges, while 60% required additional assessment.
Processing Times and Costs
Processing times for new applications and renewals can take up to 12 weeks (84 days), with over 100,000 badges distributed monthly. According to gov.uk: "A Blue Badge costs up to £10 in England and £20 in Scotland. It's free in Wales." Gateshead Council warns: "To renew your Blue Badge you need to go through the same process as you would if applying for the first time. You are not automatically entitled to a new badge because you have had one in the past."
Regional Differences and Application Process
Applications can be submitted online for England, Wales and Scotland, while Northern Ireland operates a separate system. Holders are urged to apply early to avoid gaps in coverage and potential fines.
