Arsenal have emerged as frontrunners to sign Julian Alvarez after Atletico Madrid made clear they will not sell the striker to Barcelona. The 26-year-old confirmed his desire to leave the Spanish club following Argentina's 2-0 victory over Austria on Monday, sparking a transfer battle among Europe's elite.
Atletico's Stance on Barcelona
Barcelona had identified Alvarez as their top target after Robert Lewandowski's departure was confirmed, but their opening bid of £87 million was flatly rejected. Atletico responded with a series of angry social media posts, accusing Barcelona of 'calculated leaks, fake news and constant disrespect'. According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Atletico are now flat-out refusing to sell to Barcelona. Real Madrid also had a cheeky £129 million offer turned down.
Alvarez's Dream and Atletico's Response
Alvarez had remained silent on his future until Monday, when he told reporters: "I want to fulfill my dream. I spoke with the people at the club I needed to speak with. The best thing for my future is a transfer." Atletico CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin expressed disappointment, saying: "It wasn't the right day to make such statements; it was a day for Messi and the Argentine national team, not Julian." He added: "Julian has a dream, but we Atletico fans have dreams, too. Atleti do not want to transfer him."
Arsenal and PSG as Preferred Destinations
Diego Simeone's side plan to address Alvarez's future after the World Cup. If he still wants to leave, Atletico would consider selling him to Arsenal or Paris Saint-Germain. Reports also suggest Atletico are interested in Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres, which could lead to a swap deal and give the Gunners an edge over PSG.
FIFA Complaint Against Barcelona
Gil Marin confirmed Atletico will lodge a complaint with FIFA regarding Barcelona's conduct. "Barca are disrespecting us. They think they can walk all over us and that we are weak and stupid," he said. "They lie to us, to the player, to the media... they even lie to their own supporters. This isn't the first time Barca have acted like this, and the football world is well aware of it. Last year they did something very similar with Nico Williams and Athletic Club."
