Guy Ritchie's adventure film 'Fountain of Youth' has become Apple TV+'s biggest release to date, generating 765.5 million minutes of viewing time in its first week alone, despite receiving a dismal 35% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
Record-Breaking Viewership
The film, starring John Krasinski, Natalie Portman, Eiza González, Domhnall Gleeson, and Stanley Tucci, has remained in Apple TV+'s top 10 chart for 342 days. This milestone makes it one of the most enduring hits on the streaming service, which launched in 2019 and includes acclaimed titles like 'Ted Lasso,' 'Severance,' and the Oscar-winning 'CODA.'
Critical Reception vs. Audience Appeal
Despite its commercial success, 'Fountain of Youth' has been panned by critics and audiences alike. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a 35% approval rating from professional reviewers and a 38% score from general audiences. However, a strong contingent of fans has championed the film, with one Rotten Tomatoes user describing it as 'an enjoyable caper' that blends 'Indiana Jones meets Dan Brown with a sprinkling of The Mummy.' Another viewer called it an 'epic film,' while an IMDb user praised it as 'excellent family fun adventure with an Indiana Jones feeling.'
Sequel Potential
'Fountain of Youth' may become one of the first Apple TV+ films to receive a sequel, following only 'The Family Plan' with Mark Wahlberg. Director Guy Ritchie told Entertainment Weekly: 'It was one of those films that you don't really want to end. People had such a lovely time doing it that they'd love to go back for another bite. So, we'll have to see how we do. We'd all love to go back.'
Streaming Success Without Theatrical Release
Unlike some of Apple's other films that received wide cinema releases, 'Fountain of Youth' debuted directly on the streaming platform, yet it still attracted millions of viewers. The film's availability on Apple TV+ has allowed it to build a loyal audience, with many fans praising its action-packed narrative and star-studded cast.
