Ruben Amorim has returned to management, appointed as the new AC Milan boss on Tuesday, and he could provide a career lifeline for Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount. Amorim, who spent one year and two months as Manchester United head coach, was sacked in January but now has a point to prove at the San Siro.
Amorim's Manchester United Tenure
During his time at Old Trafford, Amorim clashed with Marcus Rashford, effectively ending the academy graduate's time at the club. His tactical decisions also drew criticism, particularly his insistence on a 3-4-2-1 system that forced Bruno Fernandes into a deeper role and left no room for Kobbie Mainoo. After Amorim's dismissal, Michael Carrick reinstated a 4-2-3-1 formation, which revitalized Mainoo, who now features for England at the World Cup.
Mount's Difficult Position
Mason Mount finds himself in an unenviable position at United. With Fernandes preferred in his favored attacking midfield role, and competition from Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Amad, Mount's opportunities are limited. Injuries have also hampered his progress, and he is not held in the same esteem under Carrick as he was under Amorim.
During Amorim's tenure, Mount enjoyed a spell in the team when Mbeumo left for AFCON. After scoring against Wolves in December, Amorim praised Mount's leadership and versatility. However, no move to Milan has been suggested yet, but Mount needs regular games at 27, and a switch to Serie A could be tempting. If Amorim shows interest, Mount would feel confident of playing time, offering him a potential lifeline.
