World Cup fans at Kansas City Stadium were instructed to evacuate their seats and move indoors after a tornado warning threatened to postpone the Group B match between Tunisia and the Netherlands on Thursday. The severe weather alert came just hours after forecasts warned of damaging winds, hail, downpours, and isolated tornadoes in the Kansas City area.
Storm Hits Kansas City
Storms descended on the locality later in the day, with heavy rain lashing the stadium as warnings urged fans to take cover. A message broadcast inside the venue said: "Fans at Kansas City Stadium are being instructed to move indoors and seek shelter in concourses or other covered areas, following guidance from stadium staff." Video footage shared on social media showed torrential downpours at Arrowhead Stadium, with empty red seats visible across the stands.
Match Resumes as Planned
Fortunately, the worst of the weather appeared to pass quickly. FIFA confirmed that the Tunisia versus Netherlands match would commence as scheduled at midnight BST. The delay lasted less than two hours, similar to the suspension of France's clash with Iraq in Philadelphia earlier this week due to lightning strikes. Organisers emphasised that fan safety remained the top priority.
This is a developing story. Mirror Sport will provide further updates, pictures, and video as they become available.
