UK snow and 'intense downpours' forecast this weekend in brutal Met Office warning
UK snow and 'intense downpours' forecast this weekend

The Met Office has forecast snow to hit parts of the UK on Saturday (October 10) as temperatures plunge, warning that the weekend will "bring a brief taste of winter" to certain regions.

Saturday is expected to be the most turbulent day of the weekend, with downpours set to strike regions up and down the country. Powerful winds will also be present, making the day feel significantly colder.

Snow risk and intense showers

Alongside the wet conditions, the Met Office says some Britons face the prospect of snow over the weekend. It explains: "Showers will move through widely during the day, with northern parts of the UK likely to see the most frequent and intense downpours."

"Scotland will be particularly prone to heavy showers, with a risk of hail and thunder. There could even be a temporary sprinkling of snow over the highest ground, adding a wintry flavour to the autumn weather."

Not every part of the country will feel the full force of the cold snap. The far south and southeast will escape the worst of the showers, and might enjoy some longer and brighter periods, reports the Express.

Wind chill and overnight conditions

The north, however, will face blustery winds, which will create the chillier conditions. Some locations will see below-average temperatures, with the force of the wind making it feel noticeably more bitter, the weather agency warns.

Downpours will persist throughout Saturday evening, though they'll steadily diminish as the night progresses. There's also a chance they could linger overnight, particularly along coastal regions and across parts of northern and central England.

Sunday's brighter outlook

Sunday's weather conditions will be markedly different from Saturday's, with the morning beginning much brighter for most areas. A sharp wind from the previous night will also calm down during the early hours of Sunday, bringing a touch of coolness to the morning, although the winds are forecast to "gradually ease".

The Met Office said: "There will also be far fewer showers than on Saturday, allowing many areas to enjoy a dry day with some sunny spells."

"With lighter winds and more sunshine, conditions should feel noticeably more pleasant, despite temperatures remaining broadly similar to the previous day."

"Cloud amounts are likely to increase during Sunday afternoon, and an isolated spot of rain cannot be ruled out. Even so, most places should remain dry, making Sunday the best opportunity for outdoor plans."
