The Met Office has warned of a return to "warm or very warm" conditions in the UK early next week, with heatwave conditions "increasingly likely" in some areas as 26 counties face temperatures of 30°C or above.
Forecast Details
According to the latest weather models from forecaster WXCharts, the first 30°C readings could appear as early as Saturday, with Kent expected to be the hottest. By Monday, July 6, the heat is predicted to escalate, with London and surrounding regions experiencing temperatures of 30°C and 31°C, while parts of Gloucestershire anticipate similar sweltering conditions.
On July 7, the scorching spell is forecast to expand further, with peaks of 33°C across Greater London and Berkshire, before the highest temperatures gradually shift eastwards across the nation, reports the Mirror.
Context and Recent Records
This latest prediction follows last week's extreme heat, when provisional UK June temperature records were shattered on three consecutive days, reaching a peak of 37.7°C on Friday in Norfolk. Much of England and Wales found itself under red and amber extreme heat warnings as the Met Office urged the public to take necessary precautions.
Met Office Verdict
Looking towards the weekend, Deputy Chief Forecaster Tony Wisson explained that high pressure is anticipated to develop across much of the UK. He stated: "Toward the weekend, high pressure will continue to build in across most of the UK as it extends from the Azores. This will lead to more settled, warm or very warm conditions for many, especially across England and Wales, though some rain may still affect the far north."
The Met Office has predicted that temperatures could soar into the high 20s in parts of England this weekend, with certain areas in the southeast potentially hitting 30°C. Wales could also experience highs in the mid to high 20s.
Heatwave Likelihood
Weather experts have suggested that another heatwave is becoming increasingly probable in some regions of the UK early next week. However, the Met Office emphasised that it does not currently anticipate temperatures or humidity reaching the extreme levels seen during last week's record-breaking heatwave. Tony Wisson added: "Although a return to heatwave conditions is looking increasingly likely for some areas, the likelihood of such extreme high temperatures or high levels of humidity as last week is currently low."
